Tick Awareness Week: What You Need to Know About Tick Disease and Prevention
Read More
Southern house mosquitoes are medium-sized mosquitoes with brown coloration on their backs, and white bands across their abdomens. They typically grow to about 1/6 of an inch long. Despite their name, they are found across the nation, though they are more heavily concentrated in southern states, as well as Hawaii. Southern house mosquitoes are common in yards during summer months when high heat and humidity create favorable conditions for them to breed and search for food.
Southern house mosquitoes can transmit several dangerous diseases to the animals they bite, including West Nile virus, Zika virus, Western equine encephalitis, St. Louis encephalitis, avian malaria, and more.
Like other mosquito species, southern house mosquitoes rely on bodies of stagnant water to breed. These can include pools, ponds, fountains, birdbaths, potted plants, unclean gutters, old tires, septic tanks, and yard clutter. If your yard has tall grass, this can also attract southern house mosquitoes by serving as a hiding place for them during the day.
Southern house mosquitoes can be practically impossible to safely and effectively treat using DIY methods alone. If you’ve seen brown, buzzing mosquitoes around your yard or felt their painful bites, call the pest control professionals at Pestmaster® Services immediately. We will come up with a treatment plan so that you can enjoy your backyard again.
