Silverfish are harmless pests that are more of an annoyance than anything. Measuring up to 3/4“ long, silverfish are silvery or brown in color and look like they are covered with fish scales, giving them their name.
Silverfish need humidity and moisture and love basements and garages, preferring to live inside. They will feed on paper and paper glue (such as wallpaper), linens and cottons, but can survive weeks without food and water.
Infestations are often transferred through another infestation through cardboard boxes, books, and papers and breed in protected areas.
Silverfish are difficult to treat because they are quick moving and hide deep within walls and hard-to-reach areas where over-the-counter treatments are hard to apply. Professional pest control might be needed to get into deeper and more intricate hiding spaces.
