National Pest Management Month: How To Prep Your Property For Peak Pest Season

Mosquito on hand

Mosquito on handAlthough it seems like there’s is a celebratory month for everything these days, this is truly one of our favorites. The National Pest Management Association recognizes April as National Pest Management Month in order to highlight the important role pest control professionals have in protecting public health, food and property from the issues caused by pests.

The timing couldn’t be better as spring has sprung across the country, which usually brings unwelcome visitors into homes and businesses. From mosquitoes and termites to rodents and birds, unwanted pests can cause a variety of nuisances and potential safety issues to those in the building, which is why it’s important to take preventative measures now to help mitigate any potential issues.

Spring Cleaning Pest Control Tips

Whether a homeowner, landlord or property manager, add these to-dos to your spring cleaning checklist to help protect against a variety of pests:

  • Eliminate sources of standing water around the building, paying special attention to low areas, gutters and planters. A bottle cap of water is enough for mosquitoes to breed and lay eggs.
  • Close off any entry points into a home or building, especially around utilities and pipes. Rodents, birds and other wildlife can fit through the smallest of openings.
  • Trim tree branches and shrubbery, leaving at least a couple of feet of space between them and the structure, eliminating easy access for wildlife.
  • Keep crawl spaces, basements and storage areas well ventilated and moisture-free. Dehumidifiers can help in tricky areas.

While there are plenty of preventative techniques you can take to mitigate problems, pest control is a spring cleaning job best left to professionals. If you’ve already noticed an infestation, whether interior or exterior, contact an expert pest control company to help.
